Missionary Monasticism

January Intensives – Week One – January 6-10, 2024

From around AD 400 to 1600, monks were at the forefront of the global mission movement. In this course, we explore the history and theology of missionary monasticism, including key monks, monastic movements, and mission strategies.

Instructor: Dr. Edward Smither

Ed Smither serves as Professor of History of Global Christianity and Dean of the School of Missions and Intercultural Ministry at Columbia International University. Before entering the world of higher education, he served for fourteen years in intercultural ministry in North Africa, France, and the United States. He has authored or edited seventeen books, including Missionary Monks, Mission in the Early Church, and Christian Mission: A Concise Global History. Since 1999, he’s been married to Shawn and they have three kids: Brennan, Emma, and Eve. Ed enjoys cycling, getting away to the beach and the mountains, and taking in at least one rock concert a year.
