Raising Up Athletes for Christ: Teaching for Spiritual Formation in the Early Church

January Intensives – Week Two – January 13-17, 2024

In a disconnected, digitized, and divided world, how can today’s Christian leaders best “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints”? This course and lecture series looks to the church fathers for answers by exploring patristic and early medieval approaches to spiritual formation that viewed the faith not simply as a collection of doctrines but as a transformative way of life. By analyzing the theological presuppositions, pedagogical principles, and catechetical strategies of church fathers such as John Chrysostom, Gregory the Great, and Benedict of Nursia, students will deepen their understanding of historical, pastoral, and ascetical theology. Special attention will be given to applying ancient insights to various forms of ministry today. This course includes the 2025 Thomas C. Oden Lecture Series. Attendance is required for course credit. Details about the lecture series may be found at http://tas.edu/webber/oden-lectures.
