The Book of Proverbs

June Intensives 2025 – Week One – June 2-6, 2025

Course Description

This course offers a literary, canonical, and theological introduction to the book of Proverbs. More than just ‘practical’ advice, Proverbs lays the groundwork for a mature and sophisticated “wisdom” needed to renew moral theology in an age that has forgotten how to think about Christian ethics.

Instructor: The Rev. Dr. Ryan O’Dowd

Ryan O’Dowd serves as Chesterton House Academic Director and Senior Chaplain. Having founded Bread of Life Anglican Church in Ithaca, NY, he now serves as an assisting priest. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (1994), Reformed Theological Seminary, and the University of Liverpool (PhD). Over the last thirty years, Ryan served as a pastor, an Active Duty and Reserve officer in the U.S. Air Force, and a scholar in a variety of academic settings. His doctoral research explored the relationship between biblical wisdom and law, and, over the last fifteen years, he has examined these subjects alongside the study of moral theology. Ryan and his wife Amy have three grown children and live with their youngest daughter in Ithaca, NY.
