Residential Pathway

Complete the STM in residence at our Ambridge campus within a welcoming community shaped by worship and rigorous scholarship. Take advanced seminars, work closely with faculty on your thesis, and make steady progress toward graduation. Many students finish in 1–2 years of full‑time study, often taking 4–5 courses across the fall and spring terms and supplementing with January and June Intensives as needed.

The Church Based Pathway

Remain in your ministry context while you pursue advanced study. The STM can be completed in a hybrid format that combines online coursework with January and June Intensives. A minimum of 6 credits must be completed in residence, which may be fulfilled during fall or spring terms in Ambridge or through the intensives. Distance students typically take 1–2 courses per term across fall, spring, and summer and finish in 1–3 years of part‑time study.

The Rev. Dr. Jukka Kääriäinen

President of the North American Lutheran Seminary

Beginning your journey

Greetings! My name is Jukka, and I am the president of the North American Lutheran Seminary. This is an exciting time to be a follower of Christ. Whether you are exploring vocational ministry, wanting to visit our NALS hub campus in Ambridge, PA, or preparing to apply as a student, our NALS team is here to help you discern God’s calling.

While confessionally Lutheran, we are generous toward other traditions within the Great Tradition and seek to form pastors, deacons, and servants for the Church who love the Lord, His Word, and His people. We would love to hear from you and discuss how we might partner with you.
