Drinking Deeply from the Well

Ad Fontes is a cohort-based continuing education opportunity that helps clergy and lay leaders grow in lifelong theological and spiritual formation for the sake of their souls and ministries.

If you want to deepen your faith through studying the great texts of the Great Tradition, but you need a more affordable and flexible model than traditional for-credit degree programs, consider Ad Fontes. In this program, you get to be a student again, engaging in the careful study of texts for the joy of learning and the nourishment of your soul. You’ll be in the company of an expert guide in the study at hand and also with fellow pilgrim learners eager to learn and grow.

Format

Three people seated at a conference table with name tags, one man in a blue sweater smiling and looking at another man, and a woman in a green jacket writing notes.

Each Ad Fontes course begins with a two-day retreat at Trinity Anglican Seminary. Afterwards, students participate in a series of six to eight virtual learning sessions. Cohorts are made up of 8-12 participants, led by an expert course facilitator, and they emphasize tutorial-style discussion around primary texts.

Ad Fontes courses do not presume any prior knowledge of the subject or writings being studied. They do generally assume some level of graduate-level training in theology or ministry (usually an M.A. or M.Div.). The main goal is to afford clergy and lay leaders the opportunity to go deeper in their readings of foundational texts in the Great Tradition and to do so in the company of other lifelong learners."

The first series of courses in this program is Theology Anew: Foundational Texts and Traditions of the Church, which focuses on the writings of the Church Fathers. A Pilot Course for this program is being offered in the spring of 2026 on the writings of the fourth-century theologian, Gregory of Nyssa. Courses in the fall will open up new options. Stay tuned for updates!

Cost: $600

The cost of Ad Fontes courses is designed to be as affordable as possible, while also supporting the time and expertise of the course facilitator. The cost also includes two nights of lodging and meals for the in-person retreat. It does not include the price of books or travel. A limited number of scholarships are available on a need basis.
