In a disconnected, digitized, and divided world, how can today’s Christian leaders best “contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints”? This course and lecture series looks to the church fathers for answers by exploring patristic and early medieval approaches to spiritual formation that viewed the faith not simply as a collection of doctrines, but as a transformative way of life. By analyzing the theological presuppositions, pedagogical principles, and catechetical strategies of church fathers such as John Chrysostom, Gregory the Great, and Benedict of Nursia, students will deepen their understanding of historical, pastoral, and ascetical theology. Special attention will be given to applying ancient insights to various forms of ministry today.

The Rev. Dr. Kyle Hughes is the author of Teaching for Spiritual Formation: A Patristic Approach to Christian Education in a Convulsed Age, which combines his scholarly expertise in the theology and practice of the early church fathers with his experience working in Christian education. Besides serving as an administrator at a K-12 classical Christian school, he is Director of Catechesis at Christ the King Anglican Church in Marietta, GA, a Pastoral Fellow at the Catechesis Institute, a member of the Society of Anglican Theologians, and a board member of The Robert E. Webber Center at Trinity Anglican Seminary. His newest book, Scripting the Son: Scriptural Exegesis and the Making of Early Christology will be published by Cascade in early 2025.
The Thomas C. Oden Lectures are an annual event held in honor of the late Thomas C. Oden, and sponsored by the Robert E. Webber Center of Trinity Anglican Seminary. The lectures are scheduled to take place annually during the Trinity’s January Intensives. The lectures will be the occasion of two events: (a) three and a half days of classroom seminar focusing on a chosen topic of patristic theology (offered as a full, credit-bearing course), and (b) one and a half days of public lecture on the same topic. Both the seminar and the lectures will be delivered by the same scholar. The scholar will be recognized in the field of patristic studies, share Trinity’s commitment to the Nicene faith, and evince a commitment to the life of the Church.
