Trinity Anglican Seminary is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Matthew Barrett as a Research Professor of Theology beginning in August of 2025, significantly strengthening the seminary’s commitment to theological formation in the Anglican tradition and its expanding church-based formation efforts. Dr. Barrett brings expertise in classical theology, including Reformation theology, and is passionate about helping students retrieve the Great Tradition for the sake of recovering creedal orthodoxy in the church. His appointment directly supports Trinity’s strategic emphasis on being “classically Anglican” and providing excellent theological formation for future church leaders.
Dr. Barrett is currently writing a Systematic Theology for Baker Academic, which will be followed with a multi-volume series in Dogmatics, beginning with The Doctrine of God.. He is the author of award-winning books like Simply Trinity and On Classical Trinitarianism, as well as The Reformation as Renewal. He is the director of The Center for Classical Theology and the editor-in-chief of Credo. He is the host of the Credo Podcast and director of the Credo Conference.
Students will benefit from Dr. Barrett’s expertise when he teaches weeklong intensive courses offered on Trinity’s campus in January and June, as well as online offerings and specialized courses in Kansas City, reflecting Trinity’s commitment to multiple pathways for theological education.
“Dr. Barrett’s expertise in classical theology perfectly aligns with our mission to form leaders who are deeply rooted in the Great Tradition yet equipped for ministry in the 21st century,” said Dean and President The Very Rev. Cn. Bryan C. Hollon, Ph.D. “His appointment reflects Trinity’s commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship in service of the church. Dr. Barrett will serve half-time at Trinity and half-time at our partner parish, St. Aidan’s Anglican Church. This innovative partnership, along with our expanding church-based formation initiatives, provides our students unprecedented access to rigorous theological education in both academic and parish settings.”
“I am thrilled to join the faculty at Trinity. I love Trinity’s commitment to being ‘classically Anglican.’ I can’t tell you just how refreshing it is to be part of a seminary that is self-consciously ‘catholic and reformed,’ as Trinity likes to say. Plus, Bryan Hollon’s emphasis on Anglican theological formation sold me. How beautiful to see students beginning and ending each class day with morning and evening prayer. Trinity models for its students what it looks like to apply theology to liturgy. I can’t wait to be part of the community and learn from other faculty,” said Dr. Barrett.
Dr. Barrett will serve as the featured speaker for Trinity’s John H. Rodgers Lecture Series on October 30, 2025 at 7 p.m. at the Trophimus Center, Trinity’s newly renovated gathering space located at 899 Maplewood Ave, Ambridge, PA. The Trophimus Center, situated less than a hundred yards from the ACNA’s provincial headquarters, enables Trinity to serve as a hub for province-wide conferences and formation initiatives. The lecture is free, but registration is required at tas.edu/rodgers.
This appointment reflects Trinity’s continued emergence as the leading center for Anglican theological formation in North America, training leaders who can plant, renew, and grow churches that make disciples of Jesus Christ.
